William Shakespeare

He was born at Stratford-upon-Avon, England on 23 April 1564 and died on 23 April 1616.

The Globe Theatre (built in 1599 in London). Famous plays like Hamlet and Macbeth were performed there.

He wrote about 39 plays in total.

He wrote 154 sonnets.

1. Petrarchan (Italian) Sonnet: 14 lines divided into an Octave (8 lines) and a Sestet (6 lines).
Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBA / CDECDE.
Structure: Problem presented in the octave and solution or reflection in the sestet.

2. Shakespearean (English) Sonnet: 14 lines divided into 3 Quatrains and 1 Couplet.
Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG.
Structure: Development of theme in quatrains and a conclusion in the final couplet.

The Tempest. It maintains the unity of time, unity of place, and unity of action because its events happen within a short period (about one day), most events occur on the same island, and the plot focuses mainly on Prospero's plan and its results.

The play mainly takes place inside and around the royal castle of Elsinore (Kronborg Castle) in Denmark.

King Hamlet (the former king of Denmark who was secretly murdered by his brother Claudius).

Claudius poured poison into King Hamlet's ear while he was sleeping in the garden.

It means delaying or postponing something that should be done, often because of laziness, lack of interest, fear, or distraction. Prince Hamlet is often described as a symbol of procrastination because he delays taking revenge against Claudius even after learning the truth.

After her father Polonius was killed by Hamlet, Ophelia became mentally disturbed. She fell into a stream while gathering flowers and drowned. So, Ophelia died by drowning.

This famous line was said by Hamlet to his mother, Queen Gertrude.

The Mousetrap. Its purpose is to test King Claudius's guilt in the murder of King Hamlet. When Claudius reacts nervously, Hamlet takes it as proof of his crime.

At the end of the play, after discovering that he wrongly killed his wife Desdemona because of Iago's deception, Othello committed suicide by stabbing himself with a sword.

Drama is specifically written for stage performance, but a novel is not.
